It houses more than 2.6 million types of living plants, ranging from vines and trees to flowers and herbaceous perennials. It also has an extensive collection of water displays.
It’s a great place to go for a picnic
If you’re looking for a peaceful picnic spot, Chicago Botanic Garden Lake is one of the best places to go. It offers plenty of room for people to enjoy the outdoors and is free to visit.
This popular park is located in the north Chicago suburb of Glencoe and is easily accessible by car or via Metra train. You can also use a Pace bus or cab to get there.
The Garden is also home to many events throughout the year. These range from educational seminars to fitness classes and more, so be sure to check out their schedule.
If you want to learn more about the history of the area and its plants, take a tram tour. There are several different routes to choose from, including the Grand Tram Tour and Bright Encounters Tour. These tours run on a seasonal basis and are only $5 for members or $6 for non-members.

It’s a great place to go for a walk
During the spring and summer, the lake and its surrounding gardens are bursting with color. A midsummer walk is especially spectacular because many of the waterlilies and lotuses have fully emerged in their fullest glory.
This is also a great time to visit the garden for a photo shoot. If you’re looking for inspiration, there are several photo studios in the garden where professional photographers can help you with the creative process.
The Chicago Botanic Garden is a 385-acre living plant museum situated on nine islands in Cook County Forest Preserves. It features 27 display gardens in four natural habitats, including McDonald Woods, Skokie River Corridor, Dixon Prairie and Lakes and Shores.
As a wellness partner, the Garden and NorthShore University HealthSystem encourage people to get fit by walking. They’ve created seasonal walking maps that show routes to meet your fitness goals.
It’s a great place to go for a bike ride
The Garden’s 385-acre campus is surrounded by a natural setting that’s perfect for bike rides. You can ride from your home or from a nearby Metra station.
There’s also a trail link between the Green Bay Trail and the North Branch Trail that passes through the Garden’s McDonald Woods and Turnbull Woods, which is part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County.
Aside from being a scenic and relaxing ride, the path keeps you away from cars, which is a welcome break if you’re used to riding on Chicago’s streets.
You can easily take the Metra Union Pacific North line and get off at Braeside, then walk 1.1 miles down Lake Cook Road to the garden entrance.
In partnership with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, the Garden extended the North Branch Trail. This multiuse path links the Green Bay Trail to trails south of the Garden and also features interpretive signs along the way.
