Fernlands Trail

The Fernlands Trail is a great place for hikers to explore. It is a 20-acre forested preserve that features streams flowing between steep banks that are covered with mosses, ferns, and other plants associated with a moist habitat.

The trail is a pleasant walk through the hardwood forest with an open understory typical of oak-hickory forests. It also offers a chance to observe a wide variety of spring woodland wildflowers.

A park is a great place for kids to enjoy themselves as they can play among trees and flowers and visit the wood and stone castle. The castle features a Dungeon and Dragons theme with gargoyles, knights, pennants, and an ogre with a spiked club.

Chautauqua Bottoms

One of the most fun and interesting places to visit in Carbondale is Castle Park. Its centerpiece is a wood and stone castle that incorporates a jungle gym of tunnels, stairs, and bridges.

The dungeons and dragons-themed park features a number of cleverly designed statues and sculptures. Among the enticing displays are the largest sleeping dragon you’ll ever see, a wizard of a small sort, and a surprisingly large spider web.

Oakland Preserve

Oakland Preserve, owned by Green Earth, is a beautiful 20-acre property that is open to the public for hiking. It features a 2/3-mile boardwalk to Lake Apopka and a pavilion, which is wheelchair accessible.

The park is also home to a Children’s Exploration trail, a StoryWalk, and a prairie demonstration garden. The preserve was originally used for citrus farming but was restored to its natural sandhill ecology.

In the late 1800s, Oakland was a thriving railroad town with many buildings constructed for railroad officials and workmen. Today, a few of these buildings still dot the old oak-lined clay roads. Up next is Giant City State Park.
