Several groups and individuals came together to celebrate a two-day event on Saturday and Sunday at Attucks Park to bring awareness to the history of slavery in the United States. The event included a historical parade, an African art display, a painting, a karate demonstration and more. The Southern Illinois Unity Coalition organized the event, and members of the community volunteered their time to make it happen. They said it was important to have a historical celebration in Carbondale because of the city’s thriving black community.
